Introduction
As this virus has swept across our country the disparities in access to resources has become more striking. Nowhere is it more obvious and more heartbreaking than in the access to food. While some people complain that their online food delivery won’t come until Thursday, many more are now standing six feet apart in lines at food banks for enough food to last until Thursday. Ironically, it is the people growing, harvesting, processing or even delivering the food who themselves may not have enough to eat. Thankfully, some immediate emergency relief is coming. But we know that when stomachs stop growling it is easy to think we have solved the problem. And we know that until we address the underlying inequities nothing will really change.
In our joint partnership series with Abuelas en Acción, “Uprooting Food”, we will be doing just that—digging below the surface to expose the roots of the problem, to bring them to the light. Through our articles and podcasts we will take a hard look at the realities. It will not be easy or comfortable. But identifying the problems will make solutions more obvious. When we see needs, we also see what we need–to-do. We will outline action steps, big and small, individually and system wide. When the current pandemic has passed we will be able to say that we have come out of it better with stronger, more just and equitable, ways to nourish our bodies…and our souls.
