Emergency Preparedness
The Climate and Health Program focuses on climate change and offers preparedness workshops for the three most common climate driven emergencies in Oregon: extreme heat or heat waves, wildfire and smoke, and extreme winter weather and storms.
These workshops were created in direct response to community focus groups. In those sessions, community members expressed a desire to learn more about the changing climate and discuss how it is affecting their daily lives, connect to existing resources, get public alerts and be better informed during extreme events, and be prepared for climate events that can have a significant impact on their health.
All workshops are hosted virtually in Spanish over two sessions of two hours each (four hours total), and include a section on mental health as it relates to the topic. These are open to the public, but community health workers and other health professionals are welcome to register.
The workshops explore the relationship and impacts of climate change and each workshop topic. This includes the causes of climate change, how the changing climate is impacting the environment we live in and contributing to extreme weather events. Participants also learn about and discuss the health and life impacts of these extreme events, how to protect their health and considerations for people in their family who might be more vulnerable to these events. The workshops cover how to prepare, create emergency plans, connect to emergency alert systems and other resources.
Familias en Acción has created a basic plan document, but each household has different needs so this template may need to be adjusted for your family’s needs:
